Latvian Excursion and Arrived in Tallinn

Today was a travel day, from Riga (Latvia) to Tallinn (Estonia) about 400k. However we took a detour route through the northern area of Latvia, the birthplace of the father of some anonymous person I know.  Not may photos to post on the blog, but essentially we went to a town called Cesis, then Valmiera, a larger town and then a small rural village called Dikli, after that it was back to the coast road to Tallinn (which is a very boring road that has the same tall trees along the road all the way, now views of the coast and not very interesting. Arrived in Tallinn about 6pm, Wanda (our GPS) got us lost again but all turn ok in the end.

Plan to explore Tallinn tomorrow (Fri) and the get the ferry to Helsinki (2.5 hrs) at lunchtime Saturday, arriving 2,30pm.

In General, central Europe is a great place to visit, the land is rich and fertile, it is not over commercialised (although this is changing quickly), it is still a bit cheaper than western Europe. Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland and the Baltic States have all been a real surprise.

Tallinn has been a surprise already, I expected a smallish city fully of pretty churches and old historic buildings like we have seen everywhere  else, but from first impressions Tallinn seems to be a very modern and large city fill of skyscrapers of steel and glass. Maybe I will see the Old city tomorrow, and the Ports. I know I am very near the port because occasionally you can hear the deep bellowing of the ships horns.
