Day 2 Cusco

Today was meant to be an easy rest day in Cusco with a small city tour for those interested. However for some, it was not a good day. A few of the group were feeling off this morning after what must have been a dodgy dinner last night at the hotel. The tour took in some Inca ruins on the outskirts of town with a walk through the town square at the end to the Sun Temple. Pics are attached but it was a bit of a fizzes as far as exciting tours go. The Sun Temple is essentially now a church that the Spaniards built over, in fact the Spaniards did a lot of that, building over the existing Inca buildings, hence you see these Inca walls at the base and Spanish architecture on the top.

Tomorrow we ride the bikes to Ollanytambo, then train to Agua Calientes (where we stay O'night) and the get up at 4.30 am to go to Macchu Picchu at first light. Back to Cusco that afternoon and then a final dinner with the Compass group and that ends the tour.

It has been suggested that I go to Ariquipa, to the south and east before heading up the coast to Lima, but after this tour I am feeling a bit washed out after 2 months on the road and are considering putting off the rest of the trip until  another day and coming home early. Maybe when I get to lower altitudes, I will feel better.

More Llama pics today as I missed some good opportunities yesterday and tried to make up today.

Late news, look at end I got someone else llama pics from yesterday.

  1. Doug,
Your Postcard from Easter Island, dated 27 Feb, arrived today. The one from Iguazu Falls, posted 10 March, arrived 29 March. Go Argentine Post! By contrast, Ben sent a card airmail from China on 22 Dec -- it arrived here 9 March.
As regards altitude and general fitness, I believe the Macchu Picchu excursion is strenuous for everyone. Good luck with it.
