Does Sweden have a Stonehenge Site ?

Does Sweden have the equivalent of a Stonehenge site, well may you ask, we did. The place, called "Ales Stenar" is located at a town called Kaseberga, on the Swedish south coast. We had nothing planned for the day so Joy suggested we visit these old standing stones. We expected a few old rocks in a paddock near  the sea. When we arrived, there was a significantly large car and van park and it was getting full, there were 3 people directing parking. There were info signs, a staffed info office, lots of people and a sign stating Ales Stenar was 700 metres in that direction. I was impressed, I even asked the guy in the info centre do they usually get this many people, he said usually more. I then asked if this was the Swedish Stonehenge to which he answered yes. I am thinking how come we have never heard of these before? why is this place not more famous?. We plodded  on, through a small village and then up track leading up a hill towards the coast, over some more meadows and finally to our destination.

Well what a disappointment it turned out to be, yes a few rocks placed in a ring that roughly (and it must have been roughly) coincided with some sunsets and sunrises at various times of the year.  (see pics)

Swedish Stonehenge, I don't think so. Even Billy Connelly would be reluctant to dance around these stones naked. He would probably do what we did and head off to a (much closer car park), next to a small harbour with catering facilities and have coffee and ice-cream.

It has been in keeping with casual easy travelling days whilst staying in Skane (region) of Southern Sweden.

The excitement builds as even more information is presented (with diagrams)

Ales Stenar, impressive or what?

As you can see, I was overawed.

The port and harbour

A neat little Red car parked in the car park, Can the car buffs correctly identify what make and model of car it is. Post a Comment and you might win a prize. Judges decision final.

One has to remind oneself occasionally that all this quaintness is just a facade, this is Wallander Country, the Swedish version of Midsommer Murders, where at least 4-5 people get bumped off each  episode. It is the quiet little places you have to watch out for, I am sure that some maniacal farmers are creeping around at night in the moonlight with a shotgun.
