Hilo and Mauna Kea Telescopes

Hi all,

Another great day in Paradise, had no sleep after spending last night at Honolulu airport, but made up for that by having a great day today.

I will let the pics do the talking.

Hilo Tsunami Museum ( they copped it here in 1946)

Rainbow Falls on way to Mauna Kea

Shrine to Mountain  Gods, Manua Kea in background

Island of Old Growth Koa trees formed when Lava flow in 1834 made hill an island.

Lava examples, the bottom I think is called rope lava because it looks like rope.

Manua Kea Visitor Centre (2400 Mtrs)

Views new summit, we'll above clouds. Top was 4200 mrs

At summit with Telescopes, Australian one in the middle

View of Keck telescopes (2 in the middle), one on right is NASA and don't remember one on left.

More views

Nearing sunset

View from Summit, note Full moon and dark triangle slightly to right of slope is the shadow of Manua Kea on the clouds below.

Sunset (its starting to get cold)

One of the Kecks has its window open.

On the way back down, we stopped to look at the stars  and could also see glimpses of red coming up through the clouds of lava flows from Kilaeau. Apparently get much better views from Jagger park, no I just need to figure out how I get there. Time to sleep now.
