Aurora Borealis - Northern Lights - Success

Yes Kids,

We got to see the Northern lights tonight and even better, I got some photos. We went to a different location tonight and there was a rusted goods train flat top wagon there, lying in the middle of nowhere, which is funny because Iceland has no trains and has never had trains. Perhaps it was a left over from activities during WW2 as there was an old military base nearby. It allowed me to use my small tripod and I got some pics.

We were doubly lucky tonight as it was a good display and it was earlier in the evening than expected.  I guess the L in LB is working  again.

These photos are a bit misleading, firstly the lights are not as green as the camera makes out, apparently digital cameras tend to exaggerate the green. Secondly, they are softer lights, more like whispy clouds and they move and increase and decrease in brightness a bit. The time exposure of the camera blurs the sharpness a bit and tends to make them look brighter. Some of these shots you would think it is daylight but it was quite dark, except for the moonlight. There was a van parked next to the rail wagon and this got in the way a bit, but it also gave some perspective to the shots.

The Imagine Peace Light was not operating tonight, so my guess that last night was just a test before an official opening on friday is looking good.

It was cold out there tonight.

Tomorrow it is a full day bus tour out to the falls and the geyser.

I even got a video tonight but I will look at that later tomorrow night to see if it is OK.
